Why and How to Focus on a Peaceful Place

Bringing yourself to a sense of peace can be an empowering experience. It helps put the brakes on when you begin to feel overwhelmed or fearful.

Did you know that your external reality does not need to be a specific way for you to feel relaxed? It’s true. Regardless of the circumstances that surround you, your mind has the power to create an inner sense of peace.

The Why

Earlier this week, I participated in a virtual art session led by Rose Mavis during which I painted a tropical beach scene. The session was made possible by Forks Area Art Society, and it was the first time for all of us to make art together via Zoom. It was a delightful time of nurturing ourselves.

It was so good to ditch the evening news and instead cater to my emotional needs!

Rose gave instruction in watercolor techniques while demonstrating a quick rendering of a favorite spot of hers in the Florida Keys. I painted along, and although I had never been to the Keys, I mentally teleported to the many beaches I have been too.

We were reminded to let go of the thought that our paintings needed to perfect, that they were not intended to hang in the Louvre. They were simply to capture the essence of the scenery.

I was surprised that in such a short amount of time and with very little watercolor experience, I was able to render a tranquil atmosphere that brings me to a sense of peace. When I set my eyes on it, I can actually feel a shift in my body. I can begin to hear the gentle lapping of the water against the rocks. I can feel the soft sand between my toes and the warm breeze against my skin. I smell the salt air.

Bringing yourself to a sense of peace, even for just a moment, can be an empowering experience. This activity is a simple tool to help put the brakes on when you begin to feel overwhelmed or fearful. This product of self-nurture will be an anchor for you to focus on when you need to calm your emotional, physiological and cognitive responses.

The How

  • Imagine a peaceful place. You get to make the decisions; you get to be in charge. Appreciate the personal agency that is involved.
  • Using art materials, create an image of the felt sense of that place. Remember, there is no pressure for it to be done “just right.”
  • Behold your image and begin to sense the entire feeling of that peace inside your body.
  • When you feel anxious or stressed, return to the image as a way to self-regulate.

Art & Wellness Challenge

Create a peaceful place prompted by a real place or through the act of imagination. Begin with some deep breathing, and fully immerse yourself in the exploration. When you have a clear sense of your peaceful place, create an image of it using pencils, pastels, paints, or some other medium.

Think of what healthy things give you comfort and add them to your image if you so desire. Be aware of your emotions and body sensations before, during and after. Put your peaceful place image in a spot for you to look at when you need to calm down.

Finally, share a photo of your artwork via email at chris@chrissingleheart.com or via message on Facebook at facebook.com/chrissingleheart. Reflect on your image and tell me what it was like to do the exercise.
